Socket 1151 is an Intel CPU socket. 1151 processors are compatible with each other. 1151 processors are not compatible with any other type of processor.
The 1151 socket was released in August 2015. It is used for 6th, 7th, and 8th generation Intel processors. The 1151 socket has 1151 pins and is also known as the LGA 1151 socket, where LGA stands for land grid array. It’s used for desktop CPUs only. It cannot be used for laptops or servers.
You can get a 1151 processor from Intel or AMD. However, you can also get a 1151 processor from brands such as Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Via Technologies. You can find it in two versions: v2 and v2.5. Version 2 supports 6th and 7th generation processors only, while version 2.5 supports 8th generation processors only.
To upgrade your processor, you need to know which version of the 1151 socket you have on your motherboard. You can check the manual with your motherboard or look up the model number online. If you have an 1151 v2 socket, you can upgrade to any 8th-generation processor.
If you have an 1151 v2 socket, you can only upgrade to an 8th generation processor that uses the same microarchitecture as your current processor. For example, you can upgrade from an Intel Core i7-8700K to an Intel Core i9-9900K.

The 8th and 9th generations of Intel computers use these 1151 socket motherboards.
The 1151 socket is a microprocessor socket used by Intel’s central processing units (CPUs) built on the Skylake microarchitecture. It was launched on August 5, 2015, alongside the first Skylake CPUs.
“1151” refers to the number of pinholes in the side of the socket; while earlier sockets had 1,207 pins, 1151 had 1,151. It is electrically compatible with both Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs.
The 1151 socket superseded Intel’s LGA 1150 (known as Socket H3) in August 2015. It was followed by the successor, LGA 1151v2 (Socket H4), in October 2016 for Kaby Lake CPUs.
